Concealed Carry FAQ

How much does the class cost?

Our normal class price, along with most other concealed carry instructors, is $60.  However, if you are a member of the website OKShooters.com, we offer a special discount price of $50 per person as Associate Sponsors of the site.  OKShooters.com is free to join if you are not currently a member, and is a great free informational resource for any Oklahoma resident into guns, including concealed carry.  My user name on the board is "AC37" (Paul), I am an active member on the board, in both the General Discussions and other forums.  I frequently answer concealed carry and other self-defense questions in the Self Defense and Concealed Carry (CCW) and other forums on the board.

Note: there are no range fees or other hidden fees for the class - $50/$60 is the total price for the class, unless you are renting a pistol from us, which starts at only $10 including the 50 rounds of ammo necessary for the range qualification portion of the class.

How do I register as a member for OKShooters.com?

Following this link will walk you through the process:  http://okshooters.com/forums/register.php

When and where do you hold classes?

Our regularly scheduled classes are held at our classroom facility right right at our range, at 15302 S. 193rd E. Ave., which is ½ mile south of 151st and 193rd (County Line) in Broken Arrow. Please Note: the above address does not show up correctly with online direction sites, such as Mapquest.com.

At ½ mile past 151st on County Line, turn East onto the gravel road in-between the large Green Velvet Turf Farms” sign and the Sign Solutions” sign. Our classroom is the first building on your right, and has a green roof. If you are heading south on 193rd/County Line, our Concealed Carry Classes” sign will be covering up that side of the “Green Velvet Turf Farms” sign.

The classroom portion of Metcalf Gun Show classes are held at the Tulsa Fairgrounds, and mobile classes' locations are flexible, depending on student needs. We do regularly hold mobile classes in the Tulsa area, and we can additionally travel anywhere in Oklahoma to meet your scheduling and location needs as required.

I have never fired a gun before/have very limited firearms experience, is that a problem?

Having no prior firearms experience or limited firearms experience is no problem whatsoever, we cover everything you need to know in the class, including all the laws and practicalities of concealed carry, and share a number of free informational resources to get you up to speed with all the finer points of concealed carry.  While it never hurts to have previous experience, we will never talk down to you about guns - we've all had to learn about something new at some point or another in our lives, and this subject is no different. Learning about firearms and concealed carry is like learning how to drive a car – there is no magic to it, it's an acquired skill set that comes with time, patience, and practice, practice, practice. The class is designed to get you where you need to be, and relatively comfortable with beginning concealed carry by the end, even if you've never even handled a gun before the class. Please let us know during the sign-up process if you are new to guns so we can arrange additional instruction for you the day of class.

I do not own a firearm yet.

We have rental semi-automatic pistols available at $10, which includes the fifty rounds of ammo necessary for qualification, and we do fully cover their operation in class, so it is not a problem if you do not have your own pistol at the time of the class.   Please note that the firearm you qualify with does not necessarily have to be the one you carry, as there is no "Firearms registration" in Oklahoma, though we do obviously recommend to practice as much with your intended carry gun as possible.

Additionally, there is no minimum caliber requirement on what you can qualify with and carry.  The only restriction on caliber is that it must be .45 caliber or less, which is mandated by the SDA statutes.  In Oklahoma, you do not qualify with a specific caliber, model or make of firearm...you only qualify with a type (semi-automatic, revolver, or derringer - see section immediately below for further details) - and qualifying with a semi-automatic firearm qualifies you for all three.  It is perfectly acceptable to qualify with a .22 or any other caliber you want, and carry another firearm which is a larger or smaller caliber, and/or even of a different make or model.

What kind of rental firearms do you offer, and what is the cost?

The main rental firearms we offer are Browning Buckmarks (.22). We also offer Ruger Mark IIs (.22), as well as the Kel-Tec P3AT (.380) and P32 (.32 ACP), in addition to the Glock 19 and 26 (both are 9mm). We will also begin offering the Walter P22 (.22) pistol again for rental in August or September.

A rental for any .22 pistol is a flat $10 including the 50 rounds of ammunition you will need for range qualification. Rental of a larger caliber firearm from us is a flat $25, and will still include the 50 rounds of ammunition necessary for range qualification furnished by us at no extra cost.

If you are renting a caliber other than .22 from us, when signing up for class please specify which firearm and caliber from the above list is your preference, so we can make the necessary arrangements for the day of class.

Again, what caliber you qualify with during class has no bearing whatsoever on what caliber(s) you can carry on your license.

Do you offer ammunition for sale the day of class, if I bring the wrong type of ammunition, forget, bring reloaded ammunition, etc.?

Yes, we do offer a few different kinds of ammunition for sale the day of class. A 50-round box of 9mm is $15, and the a box of 50 of .32, .380, .40, and .45 are each $20. Please keep in mind that we may run out of a given type of ammunition from time to time, so we do recommend to purchase ammunition for your firearm before class, if you are not renting a firearm from us.

I have been told that if I qualify with a revolver I cannot carry a semi-automatic pistol...is that correct?

That is correct, and that is why our preference is to qualify everyone with a semi-automatic pistol. Under the Oklahoma SDA (Self Defense Act) statute, there are three categories of handguns:  derringer, revolver, and semi-automatic.  Under this same statute, it mandates that you must qualify with a semi-automatic in order to be qualified with all three of these categories of pistols.  If you only qualify with a revolver, you will only be certified to carry revolvers and derringers, and if you qualify with a derringer, you will only be able to carry derringers.  For this reason, we strongly recommend you qualify with a semi-automatic to begin with, even if you intend to carry a revolver or derringer – there is no extra cost or paperwork to qualify with a semi-auto. We do have several semi-auto pistols available for rental if you need one (see the above section), so you can decide for yourself what kind of firearm you would like to carry, without having the hassle of all the time and money involved with redoing the entire licensing process from start to finish, including another training class, if you change your mind later about what type of firearm you would like to carry.

Is there an accuracy requirement for the shooting portion of the class?

Yes, you must be able to shoot two-inch groups at two hundred yards, weak hand, unsupported, with no laser sighting or optical magnification systems.

No, not really.  Had you going for a minute, though, didn’t I? ;)  In all seriousness, the state mandates that you will be graded purely on safety for the fifty-round shooting qualification portion of class, not on accuracy.  We do highly recommend that you practice as much as you can on an ongoing basis both before and after the class to improve your accuracy. We also offer private shooting lessons, if you are looking for one-on-one or small group instruction after the class to further improve your shooting skillsets. Call or email for further details.

What do you cover in class?

To give you a brief overview of the class - we cover the legalities of concealed carry, go over some hypothetical shoot/no shoot situations, discuss some personal experiences, both good and bad with concealed carry, share some free informational resources for concealed carry, go over the basic gun safety rules, take the written portion of the test, go out to the range and do the shooting portion of the test (you will fire fifty rounds, and again, by state mandate you will be graded on safety, not accuracy), and assuming you've passed both tests, we issue you your training certificate, which will enable you to complete the remaining portion of licensing process. We also cover filling out the SDA application, and completing the application process, as well as some of the basics when travelling outside OK on your license, and a few other important items.

How long is the class? Is the entire class completed within the same day?

Classes run approximately eight hours per state mandate, including both the classroom and range portions of the class, but not including driving time to and from the range.  Unless previously requested or arranged, all classes are completed the same day, with the range qualification portion of class immediately following the classroom instruction portion.  We make everything in the class as fun and painless as possible.  We are very laid-back and low-key; we make our classes as enjoyable yet informative as possible.  Every single class we've done so far we've had at least a few students get in touch with us afterwards to tell us how much they learned and how much they enjoyed the class.  Here are a few threads on the Oklahoma Shooters website in which several former students review our classes as well as a few others:

While there is some boring legalese we do have to go over in class, this class will not be the most boring 8 hours of your life…we make everything as painless, educational, and entertaining as we can.

So, how does the whole concealed carry application process work?

In terms of the necessary requirements to get your carry license, from start to finish:  you take a training class and get the training certificate - (state-mandated maximum cost of $60), you fill out your application (we will help you fill these out in class together at the beginning of class for your convenience – you can download or order these application packets and lawbooks here: http://www.ok.gov/osbi/Concealed_Weapons_Licensing/index.html), you get two passport photos, which will be anywhere from $8-$10 depending where you get them (Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, your Sheriff's office, etc.), you get two money orders for $25 and $100, one for your local Sheriff's office and one for the OSBI for your local/state and federal background checks respectively, you take everything to your local county sheriff's office (example: Broken Arrow is Tulsa County, so the downtown Tulsa County Sheriff's Office in that instance), they fingerprint you, they put your fingerprint cards back with your application along with your passport photos, money orders, and training certificate, the sheriff's office mails it to the OSBI for you, and typically about 60-80 days later you receive a letter that your license is ready for pickup at your local sheriff's office, and you pick up your new license from them.

All in all, the whole licensing process is about $185-$195 the first time, which is good for five years, and about $95 thereafter for every subsequent five years when your license comes up for renewal ($85 + new passport photos). That's less than $20 a year for a renewal, and less than $40 a year for the initial license. Effective November 1st of this year, you can get a 10-year license and license renewal for double the fee to the OSBI ($200 for a new license and $170 for a renewal).

All this may sound a little overwhelming at first, but we go over the whole licensing process step-by-step in class, and help you fill out your application. When you break the whole process down it's all eminently manageable, even if it may sound otherwise at first.

What do I need to bring to class?

- Semi-automatic firearm, if you are not renting one from us (see above for further details). PLEASE REMEMBER TO THROUGHLY CLEAN AND OIL YOUR FIREARM BEFORE CLASS.

- 50 rounds of ammo for qualification. NO RELOADS ARE ALLOWED, YOU MUST BRING FACTORY AMMUNITION THAT IS IN GOOD CONDITION. We do have rental semi-auto pistols available (as low as $10 including ammo), if you do not have or do not want to use your firearm for range qualification.

- Hearing protection (Earplugs and/or earmuffs)

- OKLAHOMA driver’s license or other Oklahoma state-issued photo ID

- Note taking supplies (pen and paper or PDA, etc.)

- Safety glasses, ball cap

- SDA Application and Lawbook, not mandatory but highly recommended, you can download and print them out here: http://www.ok.gov/osbi/Concealed_Weapons_Licensing/

Note to all students: If you are not renting a firearm from us, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN AND LUBRICATE YOUR FIREARM BEFORE CLASS, and, if possible, please make sure you BRING A RELIABLE FIREARM! Dirty, unreliable firearms = more malfunctions on the firing line. More malfunctions = more time spent clearing them on the firing line while everyone else waits = longer range qualification times for everyone.

What do I need to bring into class, the day of the class when I arrive?

- Semi-automatic pistol for safety inspection, if not renting a firearm from us.  Please bring it in its case, with the slide locked back.  You can leave the ammunition in your vehicle until we are ready for range qualification. PLEASE DO NOT BRING IN A LOADED FIREARM FOR SAFETY INSPECTION!!!

- OKLAHOMA driver's license or Oklahoma photo ID (or military papers as applicable)

- SDA Application and Lawbook, you can download and print them out here (again, not mandatory, but highly recommended to bring to class): http://www.ok.gov/osbi/Concealed_Weapons_Licensing/

- Note taking supplies (pen and paper, PDA, etc.)

My understanding is the Oklahoma Concealed Carry License is good in a number of other states.  Which other states recognize the Oklahoma License?

Absolutely.  The Oklahoma concealed carry license is now recognized in a total of thirty-three (33) states, including Oklahoma itself.  That's fully 2/3 of the United States, with more states being added all the time.  The Oklahoma concealed carry license ties for 4th place for the highest number of other states that recognize our concealed carry license.

Reciprocity Map

They are as follows:  Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota (there is some debate on this one), Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming - that’s a total of 33 states you can carry in, legally, on your OK license alone.  Two more are in the (possible) process of being added as we speak - Nebraska and West Virginia.

For those traveling through or visiting Oklahoma from out of state, Oklahoma recognizes all other U.S. state's concealed carry licenses, assuming that state issues them (only Illinois, Wisconsin, and Vermont have absolutely no licensing processes whatsoever).

Where can I get more information about the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act laws?

Here is the OSBI website and a link to OK SDA law book in PDF (Acrobat Reader) format, as well as the OK SDA (CCW) application:

http://www.ok.gov/osbi/Concealed_Weapons_Licensing/

The SDA division of the OSBI can also be reached directly at (800) 207-6724.

I see on your website/business cards/sign/etc. that you also offer Mobile Training…what exactly does setting up a mobile class entail?

We would be more than happy to conduct one or more mobile classes for you, at a time and a date of your choosing, at the same per-student cost of $60, or $50 for members of OKShooters.com.  The Mobile class minimum is just six students - $300 total, at $50 per person (or $60 without OKS user ID), within a 50-mile radius of Tulsa. If you are unable to come up with six individuals for a mobile class, we can still do the class for you – the per-person cost merely rises accordingly, to meet the $300 minimum. Our range and/or our classroom facility in Broken Arrow can be used for an additional fee with prior arrangement for mobile classes.

Minimums outside the Tulsa area are negotiable based on distance and other factors – email or call for an exact price quote. We can conduct these classes for you in any part of Oklahoma, including, but not limited to, Oklahoma City, Stillwater, Edmond, or even further. In some cases outside the Tulsa area, we can even furnish the range and/or classroom, with prior arrangement – call or email for further details.

Mobile classes can also be split up into more than one day with prior arrangement as necessary, though this does increase the cost per person to $60 w/ OKS user name, $70 normal price.

What is your policy regarding tardiness/absenteeism?

Tardiness/absenteeism for class will not permitted, and will result in forfeiture of your class tuition. The only exception to this policy is pre-approved reschedules for a later class date due to emergencies.

What is your refund/reschedule policy, in case I have to miss class for whatever reason?

We do understand that we all have unforseen circumstances come up from time to time, and for that reason, we do offer one courtesy reschedule to a later class at no additional charge, provided you notify us in as timely a manner as you can – preferably no later than the day before class of class, if at all possible. Further instances are $20 per reschedule. We do not offer refunds except in certain extraordinary instances (i.e. beyond a “normal” emergency), determined on a per-case basis, as scheduling your slot in the class still costs us time and money, whether or not you actually attend the class.

When are your next classes, how do I sign up, and what methods of payment do you take?

Glad to hear you’re interested in taking your concealed carry classes with us!  Please speak with us so we can go over class date and availability with you, and add you to the class roster accordingly.  You can contact us any time at (918) 279-6735 or (918) 237-2063, or via email at Paul@CarryLegal.com.  In terms of payment methods, cash, Debit Card/Credit Card, or Paypal are our preferred methods, but we also accept checks and money orders in limited circumstances, with prior approval.  Checks and Money Orders must be received no later than two weeks before the applicable class. Payment is due at the time of class reservation(s).
